Racomitrium depressum Lesq.

HOME         INDEX TO SPECIES         BACK TO KEY

Synonym: Codriophorus depressus (Lesq.) Bednarek-Ochyra & Ochyra

Special status: ORNHIC LIST 2

Recognition: Growing on rocks in drainage channels, this species looks very much like Racomitrium aciculare in the field. The leaves of R. depressum are broader and have smooth, entire margins throughout, in contrast to the dentate leaf apices in R. aciculare. The broad, flat costa which extends nearly to the tip of the leaf is also diagnostic of R. depressum.

Distribution: Largely confined to California, it has recently been found in Jackson County, Oregon; there is also a site in Nevada just east of Lake Tahoe.

Comments: The lack of papillae in this species is anomalous in the subgenus Codriophorus and, in fact, weakens the concept of this segregate genus. Its general appearance and ecology do, however, suggest a closeness to Racomitrium aciculare.
