Recognition: The papillose, multicellular teeth of the hairpoint and its decurrency on upper leaf margin are absolutely diagnostic. Once seen, never forgotten, even under a handlens.

Distribution: On rock; rare in scattered locations from low to high elevations.

Comments: The type species of the genus, it is Racomitrium lanuginosum whether using the genus in the broad sense (s.l.) or in the strict sense (s.s.). Racomitrium s.s. in the taxonomy of the Flora of North America contains only this species.
